Current Reality

studio photo 10/7/11

State of the studio as of October 7, 2011

Ahem. Yep, there’s a lot of work to be done before my studio is ready for the Western Wake Artists Studio Tour on November 12th & 13th!

This situation could be discouraging, but not when I remember that REALLY knowing your current reality is essential to creating. I agree with Robert Fritz: when you’re very clear about both your desired outcome AND your current reality, the structural tension between the two energizes your creation. In other words, it’s great to know you want to get to New York City, but how you get there will differ radically depending on whether you’re leaving from Atlanta or Chicago! So it helps to know that this is my starting point for the clean, organized and welcoming studio I plan to create by November 11th. I hope you’ll drop by to see the results!

Shows and events you won’t want to miss:

This Saturday, October 8th, be sure to catch Works of Heart: The Triangle’s Art Auction Against AIDS, at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh. Here’s the schedule:
Free Public Preview of available artwork, 11 am – 4 pm
Silent Auction, 6 pm – 7:45 pm
Live Auction, 8 pm – 10 pm

While you’re at the Progress Energy Center, you can also check out the Regional Artist Showcase in the Betty Ray McCain Gallery, which includes three of my Reservoir paintings. Or join us for the closing reception on Tuesday, October 18, from 5:30 – 7:00 pm. Either way, you’re sure to see a lot of great art in a beautiful space.

SPARKcon!

It was such a great experience to participate in SPARKcon this year (September 15th-18th)! I will definitely mark my calendar early next year so I can make it to more of the events. I enjoyed seeing so many of you at the artSPARK gallery, and of course it was extra fun that one of my paintings won first prize! Thanks for celebrating with all of us.

A smorgasbord of fall shows!

Cindy Morefield - 2011 Fall Shows

I’m excited to be in several shows coming up this season. The first opens tomorrow night: two of my Reservoir paintings have been selected for the artSPARK gallery, one of the events in Raleigh’s unique showcase of creativity, talent and ideas – SPARKcon. Join us for wine and tasty munchies at the opening reception, Thursday, Sept. 15,  7-9 pm. I’ll also be gallery-sitting from 12-2p on Friday, 9/16, and from 12-1p on Saturday, 9/17, so please stop in and say howdy. It would be great to see you!

If you’re planning to attend a performance at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh between now and October 18th, you can see three more Reservoir paintings in the Regional Artist Showcase on display in the center’s Betty Ray McCain Gallery. You can also join us for the closing reception on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 5;30-7 pm. Mark your calendar now!

Miami traveling companions

the company

I’m happy to report that the Miami adventure was a great experience. Really enjoyed the time with my artist traveling companions from SCAD: Judy, Carrie, Ana, and Kirsten. We were hosted by Terri in her gorgeous home – an inspiring retreat after a day of walking the fairs. Plenty of good food, drink, and company.

the art

And then, of course, there was the art. Tons of it. More than you could shake a stick at, and certainly more than we could see in three days! But we made an impressive dent and visited eight fairs and venues: Red Dot, Scope, Art Asia, Art Miami, Rubell Collection, Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB), Aqua, and NADA. I did not take my camera, but took lots of notes. It really was a contemporary art education in three days! Lots to challenge and inspire. I probably took the most notes at ABMB, just because it was the largest (took two visits to get through), enjoyed the art most at Art Miami and Aqua, and definitely liked Aqua best in terms of the venue. That fair is set up in the Aqua hotel, with each gallery having a room. I enjoyed the intimate setting, very different from the hugeness of ABMB in the Convention Center.

It was a thrill to visit my own paintings in the Artisan Direct booth at Red Dot, and to share that experience with friends. Met several other artists on the trip, as well as some gallerists and suppliers.

a perfect ending

We wrapped up our visit with a performance of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company at the Ziff Ballet Opera House. The dance “event”, part of their Legacy tour, included original costumes by Robert Rauschenberg. The audience is actually on stage with the dancers, who move between three different areas throughout the dance. The musicians were also on stage in three locations, and used a combination of traditional and fantastical instruments. We were able to move all around the stage during the performance. Definitely one of the most interesting performances I’ve ever attended, and we were all enthralled. It was the perfect way to end our art-laden experience! (PS – I’ve since learned that the Legacy Tour, which continues through 2011, will the the Merce Cunningham company’s last. If they’re performing near you, go see them!)

Never have I so enjoyed art overload! I feel happily sated, as after a sumptuous holiday meal.

For more on the Miami art fair experience, here’s Carrie’s write-up at the SCAD Painting blog. Also highly recommended: Joanne Mattera’s detailed and photo-rich Miami posts, which will continue through December.

new paintings: reservoir 1-6

Here are images of six panels from my newest series, Reservoir. All of the pieces in this series are intended to be modular: they are all the same size (24 x 24 in.) and do not have a “correct” orientation, so each piece four different looks. The pieces can stand alone or be connected to each other in multiple ways.

Many thanks to KC Ramsay for his excellent photographs. Update: you can now see hi-res images here (use the “+” button to see the largest version).

These six paintings are on display at Terra Gallery’s “Silver Linings” exhibit July 3 through September 1, 2010.

photos from silver linings opening

As promised, photos of Saturday’s opening reception for Silver Linings at Terra Gallery. Many thanks to my good friend Todd Truffin for his camera work, and to the Terra staff – Jeff, Afton, Claire, & Lacey – for setting up a great show. John Battle and his band kept us all mellow and happy with their music throughout the evening.

I’m excited to be exhibiting eight new pieces in “Silver Linings” at Terra Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. There will be two new pieces on paper, including Blessed Disintegration pictured above, and six paintings from my most recent panel series, Reservoir.

“Silver Linings” also features work on paper by Lynda Cole and sculpture by Jeff Hersey. All of us use some form of silver-toned metal in our work, hence the show’s title.

The exhibit opens tonight, July 3, during the Short North Arts District Gallery Hop, which runs from about 4pm – 10pm. With a fabulous weather forecast and the holiday weekend, it promises to be a fun and energetic evening – so come on out and join us! I’ll be at the gallery from 6:30 – 8:30pm … or perhaps later. It would be great to see you!

The show will be up through September 1. Here are all the details.

The Reservoir pieces were photographed Wednesday and I will post images as soon as I get them from the photographer.

a reception to remember

Hard to believe it’s been a month since the reception for my Pilgrimage Year exhibit in Washington, DC – and now the photos are finally up so you can share a bit of the experience (you can also view the album on Facebook). It was a wonderful evening, and I enjoyed lots of great interaction with family and friends (both old and new). One new friend was Skaidra Jančaitė, a vocal artist from Lithuania, who graciously gifted us with a beautiful song!

Many thanks to everyone who participated and made the whole experience so memorable, and especially to Seekers Church and gallery coordinator Peter Bankson for such a welcoming environment.

I still have a few boxes of the Pilgrimage Year greeting cards (12 cards w/ envelopes per box, one of each painting in the series) available for $20 (+ $5 shipping, if applicable). Half of the proceeds go to Seekers Church. Contact me to purchase.

Pilgrimage Year Exhibit in Washington, DC

Pilgrimage Year postcard

Pilgrimage Year Exhibit

As I mentioned in the previous post, I’m exhibiting my Pilgrimage Year series at Seekers Church Gallery in Washington, DC. Pilgrimage Year is a series of twelve acrylic paintings on wood panel, each 24 x 16 inches. Each painting corresponds to one month of the year. I created these pieces during a very disorienting period of my life, and though I didn’t intend it at the outset, they actually became a means for me to find a path in that situation. If you would like to hear more of the story, and are in the DC area, please join me for the gallery reception on Friday, May 7, from 7-10p. I’ll be giving and artist talk at 8p. You can also read the artist statement. The show is up from March 13 through May 9, 2010. For more information, email me at artist@cynthiamorefield.com, or contact Seekers Church directly.

Cards available for purchase

Seekers Gallery coordinator Peter Bankson is printing a series of lovely greeting cards using images of the Pilgrimage Year paintings. The cards are printed in full color on heavy white card stock, and an envelope is included. They will be available individually for $2 each, and there will also be boxed sets of 12 cards (one of each image) for $20. If you will be attending the reception and would like to reserve cards to purchase, please email me at artist@cynthiamorefield.com. 50% of the proceeds from card sales will benefit Seekers Church.

And of course, if you would like your very own original painting, those will be available for $600 each.

I look forward to seeing you on May 7th!

New season, new look, new work

Spring is here! My favorite season, and here in central North Carolina we’re having a gorgeous one. I’m not much into spring cleaning (though perhaps clutter busting counts?), but new creative projects seem quite fitting. Those of you familiar with my blog have already noticed the new look. Media masseuse extraordinaire Laura Nathan Garner set up the WordPress site, and it was a joy to work with her. Thanks, Laura!

Another new event is my show in Washington, DC. I’m exhibiting the Pilgrimage Year series (see Featured Images, right side bar) at Seeker’s Church Gallery from March 13 – May 9. I’ll be giving an artist talk at the reception on Friday, May 7. Gallery information and other details here. If you’ll be in the DC area, please stop by.

I also have eight new paintings in progress for a July show at Terra Gallery, and will also have a few pieces in their May group show. Stay tuned for some sneak peeks!

What spring projects are exciting you these days? Please share in the comments.
